Your overnight doula support is tailored to what your family desires. Overnight care with Doula Care Postpartum Service may be anytime from the first night home to several times per week, to seven nights per week or several months.
Your doula arrives for the overnight at 8:00 or 9:00 PM. She readies your family for the overnight if you are nursing you create a plan about waking you for the feeds, or if introducing bottles overnight she prepares bottles. If you’re pumping during the night, she cleans the pumping equipment and readies it for you, for formula feeding she prepares all the bottles.
You settle into bed knowing that you are going to get real rest.
The next part is up to you.
Would you like your doula to sleep in a separate room with your baby, taking over full care? She feeds, changes, burps and settles your baby back to sleep. You are able to enjoy a full night’s rest.
For breastfeeding mothers, your doula brings your baby to you, when the baby is ready to nurse and assists with latch/position and observes to ensure the baby is nursing effectively and you are comfortable. After the baby finishes nursing you go back to sleep for a few more hours of sound sleep until the next feed. And the doula, changes and soothes the baby back to sleep.
Your doula rests, or naps, as the baby sleeps until the next feed.
The doula is your other set of hands to feed your baby and put the baby back to sleep as you get up to pump at night. Our overnight doulas are certified postpartum doulas and trained lactation counselors who understand that breastfeeding goals vary from person to person. Whatever you choose, we will assist with.
Another way you may choose to be supported is having your baby sleep in your bedroom. With this arrangement, you simply let your doula know when the baby is awake. She then comes in, does the diaper change, assists with breastfeeding latch/positioning, and soothes the baby back to sleep.
The doula can also be company in the middle of the night (this is especially helpful for single parents, or those with spouses who work nights or otherwise unavailable because they need to sleep through the night)
Our overnight doulas are trained and experienced in supporting families in making a wide variety of decisions about their newborns. Honoring and supporting those decisions is what we do best.
