Many insurance companies now provide Pumps. Medela, Hygeia, and Ameda are excellent pump choices.
However you will require a stronger hospital grade pump if you need to pump for therapeutic purposes to establish your milk supply when your infant is in NICU or unable to nurse, your Postpartum Doula can assist, and teach you how to pump to create an optimal milk supply.
Because different types of pumps are recommended depending on your reason for utilizing the pump your doula can review and help you decide what type of pump is needed, and if you need to rent a hospital grade pump for therapeutic use.
Doula Care Postpartum Service does not recommend that you use hand me down electric pumps from friends or buying a used pump online (besides health issues, these pumps are meant for single personal use) unlike the rentals / hospital grade pumps that have closed system built for multiple users. The pumps for personal use have an open system where bacteria or mold from the previous user can grow.
We noticed with hand-me-down used personal electric pumps they can be less efficient in the removal of milk and maintaining an optimal supply, and you will not recognize this thinking you’re not producing enough when it’s the pump, not you!
